PSO announcement welcomed
Aer Arann Express to serve Galway, Kerry and Knock until 2005

PSO announcement welcomed Aer Arann Express today, Wednesday 19th June 2002, welcomed the announcement by the Department of Public Enterprise that the airline has been successful in renewing its tender to operate the Galway-Dublin, Kerry-Dublin and Knock-Dublin Public Service Obligation (P.S.O.) routes until 2005. The airline has been successfully operating these routes since January 2001, having taken over the Galway and Kerry routes from Aer Lingus. Today's announcement confirms that the airline will continue to provide services for at least the next three years, linking Galway, Kerry and Knock to Continental Europe and the United States, through the hub of Dublin Airport. The continuation of the air services will prove vital for both tourism and business alike and will further promote economic development in each of the regions.

A total of five P.S.O. routes were up for tender including Dublin - Kerry, Galway, Knock, Sligo, and Donegal. Aer Arann Express submitted applications for all five routes and is pleased to have been awarded the tender to operate three of the routes, complementing the airline's existing commercial services from Cork to Dublin and Birmingham and from Shannon to Dublin.

Commenting on the announcement Padraig O'Ceidigh, Managing Director said, "We are delighted to have been awarded the contract to operate the Galway, Kerry and Knock routes. In the past four years we have shown our commitment to developing air access to the regions and will continue to work with the local communities to develop these routes. This is a time of expansion and growth for the company with the launch of three services from Cork to the UK during the summer season. We will continue to grow and develop both our PSO and commercial routes" He added, "We are very disappointed that we have not been given the opportunity to continue operating the Sligo and Donegal routes. We have worked closely with the airports and business and tourism interests over the past three years to increase passenger numbers to the northwest. It is regretful that these routes will no longer form part of our network. In the short term additional capacity will be available and we will assess other opportunities for route development."

Aircraft Systems Upgraded to Combat Winter Weather Conditions

Aer Arann cabin crewAer Arann Express to upgrade to International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Category II standards

Aer Arann Express is currently upgrading its fleet of ATR aircraft to International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Category II standards. This upgrade will help to increase service reliability during the winter season by allowing flights to land at airports where hitherto reduced visibility due to low cloud conditions would have precluded pilots from attempting to land.

The process involves modification to aircraft and navigation systems, and additional training for company pilots. Aer Arann Express is currently seeking final approval from The Irish Authority (IAA) for implementation by mid November 2002.

John Halpin, Operations Manager for Aer Arann Express said, "We are committed to ensuring that we match the same technical and operational standards as other airlines. We see Cork as the driving force behind our decision to invest in this project, and expect to see real benefits as weather conditions deteriorate during the winter period. With ten flights per day to and from Cork, we will see a major advantage over other airlines that are not Cat II landing capable. Aer Lingus experienced improved reliability when they introduced Cat II operations into Cork some time ago, and we expect to achieve the same results." He added "We expect to be Cat II capable on a limited basis within the next four weeks, with full implementation by the end of the year "
